  • Fun Facts: Originally the city was known as Gastown, it grew around the Hastings Mill and tavern (1867) and was not incorporated until 1887. The city is named for Captain George Vancouver of the British Navy who first explored the Pacific Northwest. Legend says that Captain Vancouver did not like the area at all. Greenpeace, the organization known for its international environmental campaigns was founded in Vancouver in 1971. Vancouver is second only to Los Angeles in TV production. Lions Gate, Paramount and Bridge Studios have studios in the city which is also known as Hollywood North. The world's largest octopus species is found in the ocean waters off the coast of Vancouver. The world's largest totem pole was raised in Victoria in 1994 (it stands 127'7" in height). The city's Kitsilano salt water pool is Canada's longest pool at 451 feet. The outdoor pool is kept at a constant 77 degrees F and open to the public. Vancouver's Stanley Park is a 1,001 acre urban park bordering the city. It is larger than New York City's Central Park by 10%. Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010 and the World Fair in 1986. For the Olympics, Vancouver had to truck in snow to some venues because of the unusually mild winter in 2010. There are no freeways passing through Vancouver's downtown. The city is very walkable, like New York. Sixty five percent of Vancouver high rises are residential. Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest port. Whistler mountain was developed as a winter sports haven in the 1960s. Whistler gets an average of 460 inches of snow annually. More than 2 million people visit Whistler each year.
