Queensware Venus Bust by Wedgwood & Bentley
This depiction of the Roman goddess of love was inspired by a model originally made at the Wedgwood (Etruria) factory in the 1840s. The Roman goddess Venus was principally associated with love, beauty and fertility - and was known by the Greeks as Aphrodite. Venus was a popular subject, often appearing in painting and sculpture during the renaissance period in Europe, and was usually depicted unclothed as she was considered to be the embodiment of female beauty.
